What is Acer VG240YP?

The Acer VG240YP is a gaming monitor that is also a great choice for mixed usage, multimedia consumption, and office work. It has many essential features and also comes at an affordable price. Read this review of The Acer VG240YP to know more about it.

Note: The full name of this monitor is Acer Nitro VG240Y Pbiip, which is shortened to VG240YP.

Acer VG240YP – Image Quality

The Acer VG240YP is a 23.8-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) Monitor. It is based on the IPS panel PANDA. It covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut and supports 8-bit color depth via dithering (6-bit + FRC).

The overall image quality of this monitor is very good. The colors are accurate and the visual quality is a lot better than the TN panel monitors. This is not surprising as IPS monitors are popular for their superior color quality. The out of box color accuracy is decent. Most users won’t have to tweak the color settings. You don’t get washed out images as you see in TN panel monitors.

TN panels are very popular among gamers as they support better response times and high refresh rates but gamers have to sacrifice better image quality for better performance in games. TN panel monitors have washed-out colors and bland visuals. You won’t have that issue on this monitor. You get a better image quality and similar performance.

It has a brightness level of 250-nits and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. These are the common specs for most IPS monitors in its price range. The brightness of this monitor is fair. It is neither too bright nor too dim. You won’t have any issues even when you use it in a well-lit environment. The contrast ratio is in the right spot to make colors pop out and stand apart from one another.

The overall panel uniformity is decent. Unless you are trained to see the irregularities, you will have no issues with it and the colors appear consistent throughout the panel.

The Acer VG240YP has a good pixel density of 92PPI thanks to the combination of a 23.8-inch screen and a 1080p resolution. The images are detailed and the text appears sharp. It is also easy on the eyes as you won’t have any blurry text or pixelated images where you have to squint your eyes to see them clearly.

The IPS monitor also has wide and relaxed viewing angles. The viewing angles of this monitor are 178-degree wide. There won’t be any change in colors, brightness, and contrast levels even when you view this monitor from different angles.

The monitor we reviewed has no dead pixels on it. There were slight IPS glow towards the edges that are visible when in dark areas of a game or movie. It is something present in all IPS monitors and is definitely tolerable.

The Acer VG240YP also has a matte anti-glare coating on it that will help handle reflections effectively.

Overall, the image quality of the Acer VG240YP is more than satisfactory. It doesn’t have too many drawbacks and you will enjoy the visuals while gaming and watching movies.

Acer VG240YP – Design, Ergonomics, and Connectivity

The Acer VG240YP comes in a simple design. Except for the red highlight on the stand, there are no aesthetic elements on this monitor. It doesn’t have those light strips that are present in many gaming monitors nowadays.

The bezels used are super-thin. They help to increase the viewing area and minimize distractions when you use this monitor for multi-monitor setups. You will like this monitor if you prefer a minimalistic design.

The build quality is fair. It is an all-plastic monitor. The plastic on the backside of the monitor has a matte finish. It is strong and durable. The V-shaped stand is sturdy and doesn’t wobble.

There are four buttons and a joystick present on the backside of the monitor. The joystick helps you to navigate the OSD. One button helps you turn on/off the monitor and other buttons help you set the image presets.

The ergonomics of the stand is only limited to -5°/20° tilt functionality. You cannot adjust the height of the monitor, rotate it, or swivel it. Thankfully, there is a 100x100mm VESA pattern using which you can wall mount his monitor or connect to a third-party stand.

The connectivity options of the Acer VG240YP are generous. They include: 1x DisplayPort 1.2, 2x HDMI 2.0. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack present on this monitor. It has no built-in speakers.

Acer VG240YP – Gaming Performance

The Acer VG240YP is an excellent choice for 1080p 144Hz gaming.

It has a refresh rate of 144Hz. You will see an immediate change in the smoothness of games once you switch over from a 60Hz monitor. Everything will be buttery smooth.

The response time of this monitor is around 3ms and its input lag is around 3ms which is impressive for an IPS panel. You can enjoy fast-paced games without any major issues of ghosting and motion blur.

The Acer VG240YP also supports AMD’s FreeSync technology. You can enjoy gaming on it without any issue of stuttering, screen tearing, and lagging. It works perfectly as long as the games run between 48 and 144 FPS.

You can also use 10-series and later Nvidia graphics cards. Just make sure you use a DisplayPort cable.

You can further reduce the response time to 1ms using the Visual Response Boost (VRB) feature in the monitor’s OSD (On-Screen Display) menu. Keep in mind that you cannot use this feature and the FreeSync feature simultaneously and enabling the VRB feature also decreases the overall brightness of the monitor.

You can enjoy playing esports games on this monitor without any issues but if you’re a hardcore competitive gamer, you should go with the 1ms TN panel monitors.

The overdrive feature in the OSD menu helps you adjust the response time of the monitor. I recommend using the “Normal” setting which is the default value. Using the “Extreme” setting caused inverse ghosting in games.

The Acer VG240YP is also a great choice for consoles like PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Although they may not need a higher refresh rate, you will have a good visual experience while using this monitor for consoles.

Acer VG240YP – Features

The Acer VG240YP has a blue light filter. It is also flicker-free. You can enjoy gaming on it or watching movies for a long time without having to worry about eye strain. You won’t have any headaches using this monitor as it is flicker-free.

The GameView feature offers pre-calibrated picture presets like Action, Racing, Sport, Eco, Movie that improves the viewing experience of such content.

The Aim Point feature offers custom crosshairs for use in fast-paced video games.

The Black Boost feature increases the visibility of enemies in darker parts of games without overexposing them.

You can also adjust various color settings like contrast, brightness, color temperature, gamma, etc. using the OSD menu. It is user friendly and straight forward.
