How Much Does A Flat Screen TV Weigh?

How much does a flat screen TV weigh? One factor that people consider when they are buying a TV is its weight. Even though the weight hardly matters once the TV is set up and connected, being able to bring it home and set it up matters to people, as well as how easy it will be to move.

Luckily, TVs today weigh little compared to TVs of the past. They are made with a lot of plastic, but they do have some metal parts, which adds weight. The reason that the weight might matter is that you will probably want to place your TV on a stand or mount it on the wall. Even if you order it online, the weight is not terribly relevant because most places offer free shipping.

Because TVs have become lighter, most stands will have no trouble supporting any TV of the size it is intended to support. The same holds true for wall mounts. They are designed to support TV size, not weight. Generally speaking, wall mounts are capable of supporting a TV that is much heavier than most TVs in that size.

However, the weight itself does matter to most people, so take a look at the weight range for standard flat screen TVs in the following sizes.

How Much Does A Flat Screen TV Weigh?

1. How Much Does A 32 Inch TV Weigh?

Most 32-inch TVs today are LED flat screens. Some are standard TVs, but smart TVs are becoming the norm. You can buy them for indoor or outdoor use as well. Plasma TVs are much heavier, but they are no longer produced.

The wall mount for a 32-inch TV is capable of handling between 100 and 200 pounds, even though the TV will not weigh nearly that much. TVs in this size range can weigh very little; in fact, the Westinghouse 32” LED weighs only 9.4 pounds with the stand.

Some of the outdoor TVs are heavier, such as the SunBrite TV 32” Outdoor TV at 45 pounds. This TV is weather proof, so it is made with different materials. It still falls far below the limit for wall mounts and stands.

Thirty-two-inch TVs range from being very light at around eight or nine pounds to the sturdier outdoor models at 45 pounds.

2. How Much Does A 50 Inch TV Weigh?

As larger flat screen TVs have become widely available at more affordable prices, their weight has gone down. The 50-inch plasma TVs used to weigh between 80 and 100 pounds. They stopped making plasma TVs in 2016, but there are some still out there. They use a lot more energy, so the UHD 4K TVs and LEDs are much more popular.

Most wall mounts for a 50-inch TV can hold up to 125 pounds, which would be enough for any 50-inch TV, including an old plasma. For example, the VIZIO 50” LED Smart TV weighs only 28.2 pounds, far below the maximum weight.

If you want a UHD 4K TV, the Samsung  50-inch 4K UHD Smart TV weighs just a little more at 29.3 pounds. The Outdoor Magnolia 49-inch LED is heavier, at 69 pounds.

You will find 50-inch TVs ranging from 25 pounds for a new LED or UHD 4K TV to 100 pounds for an old plasma.

3. How Much Does A 55 Inch TV Weigh?

Fifty-five-inch TVs are a little bit heavier than the 50-inch models, but not by a lot. In fact, the Insignia 55” 4K UHD TV weighs 29.3 pounds, which is not much different from a 50-inch version. These TVs are lighter today because much of the body is made of plastic.

The mounts for 55-inch TVs hold between 125 and 175 pounds, depending on which one you buy. None of these TVs are heavy enough for this to be an issue today.

If you are looking at the LED TV in a 55-inch version, the Samsung 55-inch LED Smart TV weighs just 38.1 pounds, and the Magnolia Outdoor 55-inch TV weighs 47 pounds.

If you buy a 55-inch TV, it will range from 25 pounds for an LED TV to 100 pounds for an older plasma.

4. How Much Does A 60 Inch TV Weigh?

There are not a lot of different models in the 60-inch TV category, but the LG UHD TV weighs in at 42.8 pounds. The wall mount for this TV can hold well over 100 pounds, so this TV is light enough.

Most manufacturers are phasing this size out and focusing on the 55-inch and 65- to 70-inch models. Therefore, if you want to get a TV this size you can count on it weighing between 42 and 45 pounds.

5. How Much Does A 70 Inch TV Weigh?

Seventy-inch TVs are popular with people who want a large television. They come in LED or UHD 4K, and they use a wall mount that can hold up to 200 pounds.

The 70-inch TV does weigh more. For example, the 70-inch Samsung LED Smart TV weighs 54.5 pounds, and the VIZIO 70-inch Smart 4K UHD weighs 56.9 pounds. This is still far under the weight allowed for most wall mounts, and it is still light enough that two people can move it safely.

Final Words

TVs have changed a lot over time, from the tube TVs that were heavy and bulky to the sleek flat screen LED TVs of today. They have become much lighter, with the heaviest modern TV weighing just under 60 pounds. In part, they are made of plastic with some metal, which allows for a more lightweight design.

If you buy an outdoor-rated TV, it is made of weather resistant materials, so it is a bit heavier, but the wall mounts are made to hold much heavier televisions, so you will have no trouble hanging the heaviest TV.

Manufacturers are no longer making plasma TVs because they are heavy and they use a lot more energy than other types. The most popular TVs today are LED or UHD 4K, and they weigh between 7 pounds for a 32-inch model and up to 60 pounds for a huge 70-inch model. If you find an older plasma, it will weigh between 80 and 100 pounds, which is still light enough to work with most wall mounts.
