If Programming Languages Had Honest Titles What Would They Be?

If programming languages had honest titles, what would they be? Programming languages are used by programmers and developers to send instructions to a computing device to carry out specific tasks.

There are a host of different programming languages that are used nowadays, the most popular of which include C++, JavaScript, C, LISP, and so many others.

But, while they all have strange names that are usually abbreviations that usually define the purpose of the language or its functionality, you might have noticed that many of the names do not really relate to the language itself.

So, what if these programming languages had honest titles? What if they were actually named after the functionality that they offered? Funnily enough, this is not as easy as you might think. Here’s what the general consensus is about the honest names of programming languages and their titles.

If Programming Languages Had Honest Titles, What Would They Be?

C++ – More Complicated Than You Think

C++ is widely regarded as one of the most popular programming languages in the world. The language was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup, and was created as an extension to the C language. It is used in a wide array of different applications, and has become an incredibly popular choice for people who want to get into the world of programming. However, the honest title for this language is probably going to be “More Complicated Than You Think.”

The reason for that is simple: C++ is actually much more complicated than most people think. It is an extension of C and adds a bunch of new features. Being an object-oriented programming language, it gives you a myriad of different tools at your disposal that you can use. In fact, the language is used in almost all of the major operating systems in modern computers. On top of that, it is also quite portable, making it fun to use on various platforms.

SWIFT – It’s Not JavaScript

Swift is a programming language that was created by Apple exclusively for programming and developing mobile applications for its iOS. The programming language now supports all kinds of development on not just mobile devices, but also for the Mac OS. But, the reason why it’s called “It’s Not JavaScript” is because despite the similarities, it has enough variations and distinctions that sets it apart. It was introduced in 2014, and has become incredibly popular over the past few years. Today, Swift is used by developers all over the world, and if you want to succeed as a programmer, you need to have an acute understanding of this language. Because almost all of the major apps are produced and developed on the Apple framework and set of devices, having SWIFT knowledge and a deep understanding is critical to your success.

JavaScript – HTML, SQL, and CSS? And, it’s Used Everywhere?

Known to many as simply JS, this is one of the most powerful programming languages in the world. It is also the most versatile. Introduced back in 1995, JavaScript has undergone many changes in its long lifetime, and the reason why it’s still so popular today is simply because it has been refined and has gone through a bunch of different changes since its inception. In fact, the stable release in June 2019 is actually one of the best in recent history. If you want to learn programming, starting with JavaScript is an excellent idea. It’s an OOP language that is widely used around the globe, and shows no signs of stopping.

Kotlin – Java Could Only Wish to Be so Cool!

Kotlin is a general purpose programming language that was created by JetBrains, and first appeared in 2011. Kotlin is a cross-platform language, and is designed to interpolate to the maximum with Java. In 2019, Google made a big announcement, stating that Kotlin was its preferred language of choice for all of its Android applications. Kotlin has a much more streamlined type inference and is also popular among developers because of its ease of use. For a person who only wants to develop applications for Android, Kotlin is a great choice. However, it’s important to note that without a thorough understanding of JavaScript, using Kotlin is going to be difficult.

Python – All the Batteries You Will Never Need, Since 1991

First released in 1991, Python has undergone a series of changes and fundamental upgrades since its release. The programming language was created by a high level programmer by the name of Guido van Rossum. Today, Python is used in a myriad of AI related tools and applications, and has become one of the most prominent programming languages in the world today. Many programmers and aspiring applicants who want to start off in the world of AI or data sciences should consider starting with Python.

PHP – A Hodgepodge of SQL, CSS, and HTML

One of the most popular general purpose programming languages in the world right now, PHP, is used for a myriad of different reasons. As a programmer, learning PHP is a great idea, because it’s going to give you a comprehensive understanding of SQL and CSS. You will also learn to use HTML to the best of your capabilities. Learning PHP is going to give you a considerable advantage in the world of programming and give you the tools to handle different kinds of programming tasks. It was introduced back in 1994, and since its inception, it has been used quite a lot in a wide range of applications.

Ruby – The Slow Script

Ruby is a high level, general purpose programming language that was created in the mid-1990s. Since its inception, the programming language has undergone various changes to become what it is, and it is, today, regarded as a very common language. Most programmers, however, do not opt for Ruby at the first attempt because of its slow scripting performance. However, if you get a particular project for Ruby, it’s best to learn the language. It’s simply going to improve your skills as a programmer and give you some more skills to succeed!
