What is Samsung SJ55W?

The Samsung SJ55W is a 34-inch ultrawide monitor. Its affordable price and rich set of features make it an appealing choice among buyers. Read this review to know more about it.

Samsung SJ55W – Image Quality

The SAMSUNG SJ55W is a 34-inch Ultra-Wide QHD (3440×1440) Monitor. It sports a VA panel. It covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut and supports 8-bit color depth.

The 3440×1440 resolution offers you a lot of space to work on several applications at the same time. It is a great choice for multitasking. You can watch YouTube, write code and manage documents all at the same time without having to switch between multiple windows. I have explained this in detail in the Additional Features section.

The image quality of this monitor is very good. The visuals look gorgeous with a lot of color variation. Its color reproduction is truly impressive for a VA panel monitor. Except for professional color-critical work, you can use this monitor for pretty much anything.

The SAMSUNG SJ55W is also very bright out of the box. It has a brightness level of 300-nits. You won’t have any issues using it even in a well-lit room.

It has a contrast ratio of 3000:1. VA panels have the best contrast ratio out of all panels. This results in realistic visuals. Blacks look darker and whites look brighter.

The panel uniformity of this monitor is alright. There were few inequalities found towards its corners but they are only visible when you inspect it closely. Most of you may not even notice it unless you are a professional photo editor.

The SAMSUNG SJ55W has an optimal pixel density of 110 PPI. The images look crisp and the text looks detailed. This makes it easy for the eyes.

It has 178-degree wide viewing angles. You will not have any change in colors, contrast, and brightness levels when you view it from extreme angles.

The monitor I reviewed had no dead pixels on it. It has a matte anti-glare coating that will help prevent any reflections from forming on it. Its backlight bleeding is also not too distracting.

All things considered, the image quality of the SAMSUNG SJ55W is pretty good. Except for a few minor inconveniences, I do not have any major complaints about it. Its massive size, impressive quality, and practical features make this monitor a winner.

Samsung SJ55W – Design, Ergonomics, and Connectivity

The SAMSUNG SJ55W comes in a simple design. It doesn’t have any aesthetic features like LED lights etc that you see in gaming monitors. It blends perfectly in professional spaces. Its bezels are fairly thick unlike most of the monitors today. Samsung opted for a flat-screen for this model, unlike many other brands that use a curved screen.

The build quality of this monitor is decent. It is made of good quality plastic. The backside of this monitor has a matte coating on it. It uses a Y-shaped stand. It occupies a lot of space on the desk. It is also a bit wobbly.

In terms of ergonomics, it is only limited to tilt functionality. You cannot swivel it, adjust its height and rotate it. You can detach its base and wall mount it using the 100x100mm VESA pattern present on it.

There is a joystick present on the backside of the monitor using which you can navigate the OSD menu. Most monitor brands use buttons instead of joysticks for their budget offerings. It is good to see Samsung do otherwise.

The SAMSUNG SJ55W comes with a lot of connectivity ports. You get 1x HDMI 2.0, 1 x HDMI 1.4, and 1x DisplayPort 1.2. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack. It doesn’t have in-built speakers or a USB hub.

Samsung SJ55W – Gaming Performance

The SAMSUNG SJ55W is a decent choice for casual gaming.

It has a 75Hz refresh rate. Although it is a modest improvement from 60Hz, you will definitely notice a difference in smoothness once you make the switch from 60Hz monitors.

It also supports FreeSync technology that helps prevent stuttering, screen tearing, and lagging while gaming. It also works with Nvidia graphics cards without any problems.

It has a 4ms response time and its input lag is around 10ms. It is a great choice for single-player games and MOBAs. I wouldn’t suggest this monitor for competitive gamers. Few competitive games do not support the 21:9 aspect ratio. Do keep that in mind.

I observed slight ghosting in dark parts of FPS games. This is due to the VA panel used. Using the Faster setting in the Overdrive menu did help reduce it to an extent.

Samsung SJ55W – Additional Features

The SAMSUNG SJ55W offers you Picture-by-Picture (PBP) and Picture-in-Picture (PIP) features that make multitasking seamless.

Using the PBP feature you can view inputs from two different sources at the same time. The PIP feature helps you split the screen into several parts to which you can assign different applications. Thanks to its high resolution, you don’t have to worry about running out of room.

This monitor has a blue light filter that offers protection from eye strain due to prolonged use. It is also a flicker-free monitor so no more headaches while using it.

This monitor also has an overdrive option which helps control the response time. It comes with various game modes and color modes which helps improve your viewing experience.
