Features Face to Face

Panel Technology

These two TVs have similar performance when it comes to panel technology. Whether you choose the Sony X900F or X900H model, you will get a TV equipped with a VA panel. VA panels deliver an outstanding contrast ratio with deeper blacks.

However, the most common disadvantage of VA panels is narrow viewing angles. Of course, this depends on each manufacturer and can result in different performances. For now, we can only conclude that both TVs come with the same type of panel.

Winner: Draw

Image Processor

Sony’s image processors are designed to level up the quality of the picture. For instance, it can convert your old video clip to 4K resolution in real-time. As you can see in the picture below, there is a significant difference between the 720p and 4K resolution.

720p upconverted to 4K example

Fortunately, the Sony X900F and X900H have the same 4K HDR X1 Extreme processor. The processor uses algorithms to eliminate noises and deliver sharp and clear images.

Winner: Draw

Motion Technology

Refresh rate describes how many times a TV refreshes the image per second. Budget-friendly TVs usually have a standard refresh rate of 60 Hz. However, if you want to watch TV content with fast-moving objects, this refresh rate can cause problems.

For example, a 60 Hz refresh rate can cause blurring effects in fast-moving scenes such as football matches. To solve this problem, manufacturers usually double the refresh rate to 120 Hz. That is exactly the case with these two TVs.

Refresh Rate120 Hz120 Hz
Variable Refresh rateNoYes
Flicker-free  NoNo

Sony has decided to double the refresh rate to deliver a decent response time. As you can see in the table above, both TV models have a good response time. However, the Sony X900F is slightly better.

But, one important factor pushes the X900H model ahead of the X900F. It is the variable refresh rate that is crucial for gaming.

When playing games, frame rates are constantly changing in accordance with the performance of the console, such as PS4 or PS4 Pro. The variable refresh rate allows a TV to refresh the image to match the frame rates from your console.

Winner: Sony X900H

Picture Quality

Resolution shows us the number of pixels displayed on a TV screen. It is the most relevant indicator of picture quality. The higher resolution, the clearer and sharper the image.

Although Full HD resolution has been the standard for some time, today manufacturers prefer 4K or 8K resolution. As you can see in the table below, both TVs in our X900F vs X900H comparison support 4K. But, only the Sony X900H supports 4K at 120Hz

However, keep in mind that these 4K TVs support both 1080p and 4K resolution. However, Sony X900F’s 4K resolution is limited to 60 Hz.

Contrast Ratio / Black Level

Both of these TVs have an excellent contrast ratio. The X900F model has a native contrast of 5089: 1, and the X900H has a contrast ratio of 4267: 1. Therefore, you can expect great deep black levels when watching dark scenes in dark rooms.

Winner: Sony X900F

Local Dimming

If you opt for either of these two Sony models, you can expect them to have a local dimming feature included. Both of them come with the Full-Array local dimming feature. Therefore, you can expect less blooming around the objects.

This feature improves black levels, as well. Even though these TVs come with an excellent contrast ratio, the local dimming feature further improves it. If you turn the feature on, X900F’s contrast ratio jumps from 5089: 1 to 5725: 1. On the X900H model, the native contrast ratio of 4267: 1 jumps even higher to 5386: 1.

Winner: Sony X900H

Peak Brightness

The Sony X900F excels in this category since it can reach a maximum brightness of about 1000 Nits. The X900H model reaches a maximum brightness of 740 Nits.

Both of these TVs have great SDR brightness, but there is a slight difference in HDR brightness. The X900F model is great in this category as well. But, the X900H model might have some troubles in the bright rooms.

Winner: Sony X900F

Color

These TVs have a wide color gamut to display HDR content without issues. They also have good color volume to display both dark and bright colors.

They also excel at gradient handling. However, the X900H model can have some banding for darker shades of colors. But, it is not easily noticeable. Overall, both TV models provide the same level of color accuracy.

Winner: Draw

Viewing Angle

Since both of these models come with the VA panel, they both have narrow viewing angles. So, these models are not the best choice for a wide seating arrangement. You can expect to experience brightness loss as soon as you shift 30 to 40 degrees from the center. So, expect to lose image accuracy quickly.

Winner: Draw

Reflections / Anti-glare

The X900F model has a fantastic ability to handle reflections. The combination of a semi-gloss finish and the additional anti-reflection coat provides great reflection handling.

The X900H model also has a semi-gloss finish, and overall it is good at reflection handling. Even though both TVs might experience some problems with direct sunlight, the X900F excels in this category.

Winner: Sony X900F

Sound Quality

Although both TVs come with 20 Watt speakers, X900F’s speakers do not deliver the best sound quality. That is why the company has decided to offer the Sony X900F TV with a soundbar and subwoofer.

However, if you want to buy sound equipment separately, there is a vast range of budget-friendly soundbars. Or you can choose the X900H model, which has better sound quality and provides a better listening experience.

Winner: Sony X900H

Smart TV Platform (Operating System)

The Android 9.0 is the operating system that comes with the X900H model. It has no issues and works smoothly. It is easy to navigate through and loads the apps quickly.

But, that is not the case with the Sony X900F’s Android 7.0 operating system. The menu is pretty difficult to navigate. You can expect some lagging when opening the menu. Sometimes it works smoothly, but sometimes there is lagging and animation chopping.

Winner: Sony X900H

Connectivity

Inputs

Each of these models has a USB 3.0 port, whereas the X900F model has two USB 2.0 ports, and the X900H model has one. The Sony X900H has two HDMI 2.1 ports and two HDMI 2.0 ports.

The X900F model also has four HDMI 2.0 ports. They all support the HDCP 2.2 and the sources of 4K HDR. It is recommended to use HDMI 2 and HDMI 3 ports for connecting 4K HDR gaming consoles or UHD Blu-ray players.

Both models have a digital audio output, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and an ethernet port. However, the X900H model prevails in this category since it has two ports that support HDMI 2.1.

Winner: Sony X900H

Voice Assistants

Both of these Sony models come with a built-in Google Assistant. Also, they are compatible with Amazon Alexa.

Both voice assistants can be used via a built-in mic on the remote. The remotes have a different style. The X900H has a stylish remote with dedicated Netflix and Google Assistant buttons. You can change inputs and search for content, but you can’t change the settings.

The X900F has a different remote, which is not that stylish, but it’s useful. It has a shortcut for Google Assistant to help you with voice commands.

Winner: Draw

Wireless technologies

Wireless connection is essential since we mostly have smart TVs today. So, you probably want to connect to the internet wirelessly and connect wireless gadgets to your TV.

These Sony models support the Wi-Fi connection, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. But, they also support Bluetooth 4.1 connections.
