Stop AirPods Pro from falling out of ears!

AirPods are pretty costly as they are. And when you factor in the fact that they’re so easy to lose, they become very expensive liabilities.

So when your AirPods Pro keep falling out of your ears, that’s when it’s time to take a stand.

AirPod Pros can fall out of your ears due to many reasons, including a sizing issue or due to the slipperiness of the silicone.

Whatever the case, how do you pinpoint the problem? And how do you fix the issue of AirPods Pro keep falling out?

Here’s our complete guide on keeping your AirPods in your ears.

Why do Airpods Pro keep falling out?

Wrong size

The most common reason your AirPods Pro keep falling out is that you have the wrong size. Correctly sized AirPod Pros will always fit. If you have the wrong size, they will keep falling out of your ear.

But do AirPod Pros come in different sizes? Yes, that’s one of the many factors that differentiate them from the regular AirPods. While regular AirPods are all one size, the AirPod Pros come with different-sized silicone tips.

You can choose from small, medium, and large silicone tips. What’s even better is that you get all three sizes when you order the AirPod Pros. So you don’t have to pay extra just to make sure they fit.

Remove the silicone tips and replace them with different sizes. Try out the size and check to see which one is perfect for you.

AirPods getting knocked out of ears

Another common reason the AirPod Pros keep falling out of your ears is that they get knocked out. This could be due to many factors. If you’re constantly touching the AirPod Pros when they’re in your ears, then they’ll get knocked out more often. Moreover, if you wear something else around your ears, like a mask or earrings, then your AirPods will fall out more often.

This is a lot worse than having the wrong fit, as your AirPod Pros will be more prone to getting lost. And you certainly don’t want that. Try avoiding wearing things on your ears like earrings. They’re going to get overtaken by the AirPods anyways, so you might as well not wear them or take them off.

How to keep AirPods from falling out

So how to keep AirPods from falling out? Here are a few techniques:

Make sure you’re wearing them properly

The first step to ensuring that your AirPods are not falling out is to make sure that you’re wearing them right. The easiest way you can do this is to get the right size earbud tips if you’re using the AirPod Pros. The silicone tips on the AirPod Pros come in 3 different sizes, and you must ensure that you wear the correct size.

Other than that, take good care when wearing the AirPods. Check to see if you have the right AirPod plugged into your right ear and the left into your left ear. You can do this by looking at the letter “L” and “R” (for left and right, respectively) printed on the stem.

Also, ensure that the part of the AirPod that contains the speaker is going directly into your ear. For AirPod Pros, this is easy (it’s the part with the silicone tip). But for the AirPods, you may confuse some other parts for the speaker (for instance, the microphone). By wearing the AirPods and AirPod Pros properly, you ensure that they fit snugly into the shape of your ear.

You might also be tempted to wear your AirPods where the stem points forward. Perhaps you think that this gives it a cooler look. But in reality, this could affect the fit. So make sure when you wear the AirPods that the stem points directly downward.

Wear AirPods upside down (original Airpods 1 & 2)

Are you wearing your AirPods properly, but they still don’t fit? Then you can try wearing them upside down. This is a new trend that people have discovered. The thing is that how you should wear your AirPods depends on the shape of your ear. And while everyone has a similar ear shape, they’re not always the same.

That’s why some people find it more comfortable to wear their AirPods upside down. They find it better if the stem of the AirPods is facing upward. Now, it does look a bit ridiculous if you go out in public. But for use in private settings, it’s worth a try.

Some people even find that using the AirPods sideways (with the stems pointing in front or behind you) is better. Again, you can try this option and see if it makes the situation any better.

Another method is to wedge them in more tightly into your ear canal. This way, the sound from your AirPod reaches your eardrum faster, and the AirPod stays secure in your ear. However, this also means that the microphone is now further from your mouth. So it may affect FaceTime calls and voice recordings.

Memory foam tips

Do your AirPods Pro keep falling out even when you’re wearing the right size silicone tips? The reason that so many people are unhappy with Apple’s silicone earbud tips is that these tips are prone to slippage. The alternative is to use foam tips or memory foam tips.

Unfortunately, Apple does not manufacture nor ship any foam tips with your AirPods Pro. This means that you must look to third-party manufacturers.

There are many third-party makers of foam tips meant for AirPod Pros. And many manufacturers make them for other brands, which can be used with the AirPod Pros. Some of these include the Symbio Hybrid, Comply Foam, Foam Masters Ver 3.0, and the F FEYCH Replacement Tips

These memory foam tips are comfortable and conform to the shape of your ear canal. Hence they fit and do not fall out. Additionally, due to the porous nature of the foam, the resulting friction will prevent the tips from slipping out.

In addition to the above AirPod Pro tips, there are some upcoming options like the Federico Viticci. There’s still some time until those get rolled out, though. So you’ll have to make do with generic memory foam tips.

Insert AirPods like earplugs

Another option to prevent your AirPods from falling out is to use them like earplugs. No, we don’t mean plugging the stem into your ears. We mean fitting the AirPods more into your ears without having them fall out.

Doing this is simple. Grab the back of your ear and pull upward on it so that your ear canal is exposed. Now, push the AirPod or AirPod Pros into the ear canal (tip-first) as far as you can. Then, let go of the back of your ear to let it close down onto the AirPod.

In this way, you will be using your AirPods pretty much like earplugs. This isolates more of the sound from the AirPods and ensures that they fit.

Be careful, though, as this might block out your microphone. One major issue with wireless earbuds like the AirPods is that the mic is far from your mouth. And by pushing the AirPods deeper into your ears, you’re only moving the mic further away from your mouth.

So although this technique is ideal for preventing your AirPods from falling, it’s not the best for calls and voice notes.

Waterproof tape

One of the most common reasons your AirPods fall out of your ears is the lack of friction. This is because AirPods have very smooth surfaces that do not create much room for friction. Luckily, and quite surprisingly, one user on the MacRumors forum discovered something new. They found that if you stick some waterproof tape to the sides of your AirPods, it prevents them from falling out.

It’s pretty effective too. All you need to do is cut some small pieces of waterproof tape and stick that to the sides of your AirPods. This method is ideal for both AirPods 1 and AirPods 2.

The reason why you use waterproof tape is that it has a better grip than regular tape. And since it’s waterproof, it won’t lose its adhesiveness when exposed to sweat or rain.  This will allow you the full potential of the AirPods.

3rd party accessories

You have the option of using third-party accessories. These accessories are designed to make the AirPods fit into your ears better and prevent them from falling out.

The first accessory we want to point out is ear hooks for the AirPods. These ear hooks are third-party manufactured products and can be bought from many retailers worldwide. These hooks wrap around your ear and provide a secure fit. They prevent your AirPods from falling out and keep you from losing them. You can find them for both the AirPods and the AirPod Pros.

Another popular accessory is an AirPod cover. These are third-party covers designed to keep dust and sweat from damaging the AirPods. Additionally, they also prevent the AirPods from slipping out from your ears. You can buy these for both the AirPods 1 and AirPods 2. They may also feel more comfortable and can be used in conjunction with memory foam tips for AirPods. Some good brands that sell AirPod and AirPod Pro covers include EarSkinz

Problems from Airpods falling out

Why does it matter if your AirPods Pro keep falling out? These are a few of the consequences when this keeps happening:

Active noise cancelling feature won’t work

The biggest problem with AirPods Pro that keeps falling out is that the active noise canceling feature will stop working. This is because when your AirPods fall, even on a soft surface, it damages the internal components. And yes, that includes the active noise cancellation circuit.

Apple AirPods Disable Noise Cancellation
Apple AirPods Noise Cancellation

If you didn’t know, active noise cancellation is different from passive noise cancellation. In passive noise cancellation, factors like airtightness and a snug fit are used to prevent sound from leaking. In active-noise cancellation, a wave that is 90-degree out of phase is produced, which cables with the noise. This allows the signal to sound a lot smoother.

And as you may have expected, active noise cancellation uses a lot of very intricate components. These components can be damaged when you drop your AirPods.

And that’s not all. This can also lead to the passive noise canceling failing you. When your AirPods don’t fit in your ear canals properly, they will not be able to block out outside noise. This will lead to a decreased sound experience and decreased enjoyment for you.

losing Airpods

Another common issue associated with AirPods that keep falling out is losing them. Think of it, you just spent a fortune on your AirPods. And they’re so small and light that they’re vulnerable to being lost. That’s the fear that most people have when they buy AirPods or AirPod Pros.

If your AirPods do not fit into your ears, then you are more susceptible to losing them. And unfortunately, this is more often the case than not. You wouldn’t believe just how many people invest in detachable AirPod straps to keep them secure around your neck when you’re not using them.

This is one way of ensuring that you never lose your AirPods. Another way of doing so is to prevent the AirPods from falling out in the first place. You can do this by using third-party memory foam tips and accessories. Or you can use the proper sized earbud tips if you’re using the AirPod Pros.

How can I make my AirPods Pro fit better?

You can make them fit better by changing the size of the silicone tips. There are 3 sizes of silicone tips that come along with your AirPod Pros: small, medium, and large. Start with the small one as it will create the least stress on your ears. Then, if necessary, switch to the bigger sizes.

You can also buy AirPod hooks that prevent the AirPods from slipping from your ear canals. Additionally, if you have a slightly higher budget, you can invest in memory foam tips. These tips have a lot more friction and stay inside your ear far longer than silicone tips. Plus, they’re more comfortable.

Do AirPod pros stay in your ear?

It depends on whether or not you’re wearing the correct size of the silicone tips. Essentially, it all comes down to how well the AirPod Pros stay in your ears. If they don’t fit, they will fall, and you can easily lose them. Additionally, the impact from the fall is not good for your AirPod Pros.

Conclusion

AirPods and AirPods Pro keep falling out of your ears are not extraordinary situations. They happen way too often. But how do you prevent your AirPods from falling out of your ears?

In a nutshell, the best way to prevent your AirPods from falling out of your ears is to ensure you have the right size. This means trying out different sizes of silicone tips and purchasing accessories, if necessary.

And finally, if nothing works, you can always return your AirPods within 14 days from the date of purchase. Of course, that’s only if you bought them directly from Apple.
