Upwork vs Fiverr – Which is best in 2023

If you’re trying to work out whether you should opt for Fiverr or Upwork, then it’s not always easy to know which to choose. They both provide the same end product – helping you get tasks and jobs done by someone else.

But in many cases, one of these two will be a better choice than the other one. However, this really depends on what your task is and what work you’re trying to get done. They’re both fairly common places to visit for both small business owners looking for staff, and freelancers looking for work.

The truth is though that Fiverr and Upwork are quite different than one another, although they are both essentially a freelance platform. So, lets take a look at the differences between the two to see which is a better option.

Upwork vs Fiverr

The main difference between Upwork and Fiverr is that you generally use Fiverr to purchase something specific which a seller is offering. However, with Upwork you have the ability to create your own project and invite freelancers to apply to your open position. Fiverr is generally cheaper, but Upwork often gives you better quality.

It really depends on what exactly it is you’re looking to get done, and the timeframe you need it done by. So, let’s take a look at some different things that you might need doing for yourself or your company and see which would be the better choice for that specific tasks.

Task #1 – Content Writing

It’s better to use Upwork for finding content writers – I can say that without any hesitation whatsoever. Upwork is one of the best sites out there for this, and you can create your own projects and post it on their site. You can specify exactly what you want, the amount you want to pay, and how experienced you need the writer to be.

After this, you’ll generally get more than a dozen responses – it really depends on how difficult your project is. If it’s easy, you might get 30+ people applying for your available job.

You can easily go through these applications and see both their experience, as well as the amount they’ve earned through Upwork so far.

TIP: I usually only hire people that have earned a decent amount of cash on Upwork already.

You’re then free to bargain with the freelancer if they want more, but they generally won’t apply unless they think your offer is fair.

You can set a deadline with them for the work to be finished by, and when it is finished, you can easily read through their work and see if it needs any improvements. If it does, you can ask them to revise it – I’ve done this plenty of times, and usually writers are okay to do this once or twice with no extra cost.

In contrast to Fiverr, which is a website full of spun article sellers created by bots, there’s really no comparison between the two for this. You might be able to find one good seller in ten for content on Fiverr, but it’s not easy to find one. Upwork is one of the best freelance websites for content writers.

Verdict: Upwork is the better choice for content writing.

Task #2 – Logo Design

Logo design is a tricky one, because it really depends on what exactly it is that you want. If you want a really complex logo made for you, then you’re going to need to work with an expert and explain to them exactly what it is that you want.

However, the truth of the matter is that unless you’re a really big brand, then you aren’t going to need to get an expensive logo made. You’ll be just fine with the variety of different sellers that they have on Fiverr.

Keep in mind that if you want a really crisp logo, you’re better off opting for an .svg image as opposed to the standard .png files that many of the cheaper sellers will offer you.

Verdict – Fiverr is the best choice for logos for most people

Task #3 – Programming Work

Talking about programming work is a difficult one, because there are many different jobs that you might need from a programmer.

I’d say that for the most part, Upwork would be the better choice of the two. If you need some work done to your website and it’s substantial, then just get yourself on Upwork and find a programmer on there.

You can easily find someone and just pay for an hour of their time, which can help you fix any issues you might be having with a website. This is especially good if you aren’t exactly sure what you need done, too.

Verdict – Upwork is better for finding programmers.

Task #4 – SEO and Marketing Work

Whatever you do, do not buy backlinks for your website from Fiverr. Buying backlinks for your website from Fiverr is kinda of like buying a bottle of wine from Lidls, or going to Primark to buy a suit. You’re just going to get really low quality backlinks from either of these two sites, which makes them pretty much worthless.

You would be much better off working with a freelancer from Upwork who has some experience in the field. They can work with you to create some good content which can attract high quality backlinks, which would be better for your website in the long run. So yes, Upwork wins this one by a mile.

Verdict – Upwork is better for SEO and Getting Traffic to your Website.

Task #5 – Video Creation and Voiceovers

Aside from Logos, video creation and voiceovers are the only things that I recommend that you use Fiverr for. You can actually find some really great gigs on Fiverr for helping you create videos for your brand.

When you’re need someone to speak about a brand, then Fiverr is great for that. If you already have a script in mind, then all you’ll need to do is find someone with the ability to read it out properly.

And likewise with voiceovers, you can also find someone quite easily who will read your script. It’s quite cheap, too.

Verdict – Upwork is better for SEO and Getting Traffic to your Website.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both Fiverr and Upwork offer different ways to hire people to help you with any of your projects. If you’re trying to get a lot more work done, then both of these options are websites that help you be more productive.

Whilst Fiverr is the better choice for getting cheap jobs done quickly, if you want something done right then most of the time Upwork is the better choice of the two. Upwork provides the better user interface for your work, as well as a platform which holds the best freelancers available.
